Often in our formative years, we discover our love of reading, ideas, and creative expression through the written word. As we seek education to pursue careers and make our way in the world, often the formative love of writing and creativity get sidelined until life experience collides with internal desire to create and share once more.
If you’ve ever felt that desire to write a book to share your story, experience, or expertise, you’re not alone. Many people seem to have an innate desire to write a book–some even spend a lifetime trying to accomplish this big task. It can feel like scaling a mountain when you’re working full-time, or aren’t sure where to begin.
As adults who may have pursued non-creative careers, these desires to write have most likely bubbled up over the years in bits and pieces. If you are drawn back to your experiences, life events, and desire to use your experiences and expertise to help and encourage others, you might just have a nonfiction book in you yet. In this article, I’d like to share more about my book coaching packages for sensitive and passionate leaders who want to leave a legacy.
That’s where a book coach comes in. Without the time to join a writer’s association and take advantage of being in a critique group, it makes perfect sense for many professionals to find a like-minded nonfiction book coach to help them achieve their goals.

How Do I Achieve My Book-Writing Goals?
Have you asked yourself this question? If you have short writings stored in a notebook, on your hard drive, or even as voice notes on your phone on topics that connect to a recurring theme in your life, you’re already on your way to writing your first nonfiction book. Many sensitive leaders can’t fathom how to begin. They are used to working with a personal trainer for fitness, hiring a house cleaner to keep their homes clean, and hiring a business coach to assist with entrepreneurship, so it makes perfect sense to hire a book coach to whip you and your project into shape so that you can hit the goal of publishing your first book.
Step 1 – Book Coaching Packages: Finding the Right Coach
Finding the right book coach is the most important step. When I meet with new clients in a free writer strategy session, I’m interviewing them as much as they are interviewing me. Clients I serve tend to have a few things in common: They are passionate about their careers or personal experiences. They desire to make a difference in the world through their experiences. They feel their story is valuable and worthy of being written and shared. They are also go-getters, okay with giving things their best shot and revising their work to fit the scope of the project. Being coachable is one of the most important skills you can bring to the table. If you want to work with a book coach, but you hope to call all the shots and do things “my way or the high way,” we won’t be the best fit.
I’ve spend the last eight years going to writer’s conferences, studying and taking courses on book publishing, learning about the publishing industry as a whole, and self-publishing two professional nonfiction books myself. I put myself through a crash course in learning how to publish ebooks and print books using Amazon and several other platforms. I developed my own system that has been successfully repeated to assist authors.
So, if you have a few years to learn how to write a successful book and publish it yourself – you don’t need me. But, if you don’t have that kind of time or energy, I’m here to walk alongside you and coach you through your book writing and publishing process.
Step 2 – Book Coaching Packages: Choosing the Best Writing Frequency Schedule
As the saying goes, “timing is everything.” One of the first questions I ask potential clients is, “do you have the space in your schedule for planning (with me) and writing your book on a weekly or bi-weekly basis? Most clients I work with are busy sensitive and dynamic professionals with limited extra time. They are squeezing book writing into an already busy schedule–but they don’t want to sideline their dreams any longer. For this type of client, I recommend writing two chapters per month. I work with the client to give them comfortable deadlines they can easily hit plus we set meetings at convenient times.

Step 3 – Book Coaching Packages: Planning Phase
When I begin working with my book coaching clients, we take the first month to meet two to three times in order for them to explain their book premise to me, share with me several writing samples of text that fits with the theme. We then build our their book grid which includes the book’s felt need, proof, author, and approach to clarify the goal’s for the book’s audience.
Once we plan out this information, we tackle the book’s chapter map – a detailed outline that includes section descriptions, chapter formats, chapter titles, plus detailed descriptions about what information each chapter will include. Taking into account how many chapters the book will have, we divide this by the package you opt for – one chapter per month, two per month, or four chapters per month – and build a book masterplan that includes a timeline for how long we will work together. Typical books take between five and 18 months to complete in most cases.
Step 4 – Book Coaching Packages: Evaluating if I’m Ready
Here’s a list of questions to help identify if you’re a serious book coaching client. These questions focus on commitment, time management, financial resources, and technical skills:
Time Commitment:
- Do you have 5-8 extra hours per week to dedicate to writing and revising your chapters?
- Can you commit to regular weekly or bi-weekly meetings for coaching sessions?
- Are you able to set aside occasional blocks of time (e.g., weekend writing retreats or dedicated writing days) to focus solely on your book project?
- How do you plan to balance your writing time with other personal and professional commitments?
Financial Readiness:
- Do you have a budget in place for your book project, including coaching and potential self-publishing costs ($8,000-12,000)?
- Are you prepared to invest in editing, book cover design, and marketing if you choose to self-publish?
- Have you considered other expenses like hiring a proofreader or formatting services for your final manuscript?
Project Scope & Vision:
- What is your primary goal for this book (e.g., personal growth, professional expertise, creative fulfillment, or becoming a published author)?
- How many pages or words do you envision your book will be, and are you comfortable with that scope?
- What challenges or obstacles do you foresee in completing your book, and how do you plan to overcome them?
Technical Skills:
- Are you proficient with Microsoft Word, especially using Track Changes for editing and revisions?
- Do you feel comfortable using collaborative tools like Google Docs or Dropbox to share and manage your drafts?
- Have you worked with any writing or editing software before (Scrivener, Grammarly, etc.)?
Dedication to the Process:
- What motivates you to write this book, and why is now the right time for you to pursue this project?
- Have you outlined your book or begun any initial drafts? If so, how much progress have you made?
- Are you open to constructive feedback, making significant revisions, and adjusting your writing as needed throughout the process?
- Are you ready to make the necessary lifestyle adjustments to prioritize your writing?
Publishing Plans:
- Are you aiming to traditionally publish, self-publish, or are you undecided?
- Do you understand the time commitment required for self-publishing, including marketing and distribution efforts?
- How will you measure success for your book project (completing a first draft, publishing, reader reviews, sales)?
These questions should help you understand the commitment necessary to the writing process.
